Treatment Overview:
Also known as acne vulgaris, acne is a skin condition that occurs
when the hair follicles that lead to the oil glands under the skin get clogged,
causing pimples on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. Types of acne
include blackheads that rise to the skin's surface and look black; whiteheads
that stay under the skin's surface; nodules – large, painful, solid pimples; papules
– small, tender pink bumps; pustules – pimples that red at the base and have
yellow or white pus on top; and cystic acne – painful, deep pimples – a type of
acne that is hard to treat and may leave scars. There are several factors that
can trigger acne, most commonly, hormonal changes at the time of puberty. Acne
treatments include a wide range of options from nonprescription acne products to
prescription medications, to surgery.
