Varicose veins are purple or blue enlarged, twisted, or swollen veins. This is a quite common condition, which for many people is a family trait. Women are much more likely to develop varicose veins. The most commonly affected veins are usually those on your legs and feet due to increased pressure in the veins from walking or standing. Veins become varicose when valves in the veins stop working properly and allow blood to pool or to flow in the wrong direction. Pregnant women and overweight people have an increased risk of varicose veins.
