Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs when skin
pores get clogged by greasy secretions from the oil glands (sebaceous glands), dead
skin cells, dirt and bacteria. The clogs take the form of whiteheads (small, skin-colored
bumps) and blackheads or pimples (flat, small spots with dark centers) that usually
appears on the face, forehead, chest, shoulders, and upper back. Acne is the most
common skin condition in the USA, which in about 80 percent of cases occurs
during puberty, when the oil glands activate due to increased androgen hormone
production. Androgen includes testosterone, which triggers the body to make
more sebum – the oil produced in the skin's oil glands.
