When losing a significant amount of weight, it is common to
have loose body skin on the stomach and other areas as a result. During weight
gain, such as during pregnancy, skin expands in order to make room for
increasing growth in the abdomen and other parts of the body. After having been
significantly stretched for a considerable time, the skin loses its ability to
retract because the supportive connective tissues – elastin and collagen fibers
– become damaged, which causes the excess skin to hang from the body. There are
a number of factors that influence the loss of skin elasticity, including
genetics, age, smoking, exposure to sun, amount of weight lost and the length
of time a person has had excess weight.
