Cellulite, referred by physicians as edematous
fibrosclerotic panniculopathy (EFP) and also known as cottage-cheese skin, orange-peel
skin, the mattress phenomenon, and hail damage, is the dimpled appearance of
the skin. Cellulite usually occurs around the buttocks and thighs, as well as on
the upper arms, lower abdomen, and breasts. It affects both women and men, although
because of the different distributions of muscle, fat, and connective tissue, cellulite
is more common in females. It also commonly appears with aging, as the skin
loses elasticity. Causes that may contribute to appearance of cellulite also
include genetic, hormonal, lifestyle and dietary factors.
