A stretch mark, also known as striae, is a kind of scar on
the skin that develops when the skin expands rapidly during puberty, pregnancy
or weight gain and as a result of an increase of cortisone in your system,
which makes the skin lose its elasticity. The rapid skin growth causes elastin
and collagen – the protein that makes up the connective tissue in the skin – to
rupture. Stretch marks may occur during the healing process on almost any part
of your body, but they most commonly appear on the breasts, upper arms, stomach,
buttocks, and thighs.
